I grew up in a Southern Baptist church. Those of you who have spent as much time as me in the Southern Baptist church know that alcohol is a taboo topic. That said, (and I know I'm generalizing here to a degree,) Southern Baptist leaders rarely, if ever, tell you why they believe alcohol is a "no no." I still attend a Southern Baptist church, which I love. But even as a member of the denomination, I recognize that the Southern Baptist agenda doesn't always mesh with my understanding of Jesus.
We discussed the issue of alcohol in Sunday School a few weeks ago. A friend of mine, knowing I was interested in really understanding God's position on the subject, sent me the link below. I appreciate this pastor's candor, boldness, and Bible-based teaching about the issue. Even better, he addresses other issues typically not addressed in the Southern Baptist church and how that failure results in a horrible form of hypocrisy. I don't want to give it all away, and I certainly couldn't do it justice. But I can hear the Southern Baptists gasping all over South Carolina where he preached the sermon (he is the pastor of a church called NewSpring, which is a Southern Baptist church interestingly enough). If you have any interest or concern on this topic, the sermon is well worth your time. If you skip to about 24:00 on the video, you will be starting at the beginning of the sermon. The really good stuff is later in the video. Take the time to watch. The lesson is this: our righteousness comes not from what we do, but from what Jesus did. Enjoy, and let me know your thoughts. This guy is awesome! And yes, he is preaching in blue jeans. GASP!!!

I look forward to watching this! I have a strong opinion towards alcohol myself as those of you who know me probably know. Part of it is my up bringing in a "Southern Baptist Church," and part from seeing that nothing good ever comes from it.
That is one thing I appreciate about Pat, he preaches THE WORD, even if sometimes I don't agree with it. ;0)
Which I am assuming is where this sermon is going. ;0)
I definitely want to watch this when I have time. Mike Glenn at Brentwood Baptist has touched on this subject many times on Tuesday nights at Kairos. He doesn't condemn it, but he doesn't condone it either.
