And no, I'm not talking about President Bush. You know, in this mortgage bailout nightmare, I can't help but notice that, again, our former President Clinton, who is truly considered next to God for many Democrats I know, comes away unscathed. Everyone knows that part of the problem is (1) the high dollar banks loaning money to people who never should have received a loan in the first instance, and (2) the homeowners who can't afford to pay their utility bills purchasing homes they certainly can't afford. Of course, McCain and Obama both claim the other one played into the mess by supporting Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and their massive purchasing of "questionable" loans from other banks.
And in all of the madness, I can't help but think about our 'ole buddy Bill, who was "always looking out for the little guy." I have friends who literally tear up when they talk about "the good ole days" when he was President. Of course, I remind them that no matter who got elected in 1992, that person was going to benefit from the swinging pendulum that is the American economy and that worked to his advantage during that decade. (The same way I recall everyone saying that whomever was elected in 2000 would suffer from the pendulum swinging the other direction....fast forward....2008.) But it appears that the pendulum isn't the only thing that brought us to this place, and I'm always in awe at how the former President is never held accountable for the role that he played in causing negative outcomes. I'm constantly amazed that no matter what Clinton did during his tenure as President, whether it be christening the Oval Office with his lustful, boyish immaturities, or making a mockery of the American justice system by lying under oath....he always comes out unscathed. So, here's to you Bill....thanks for pressuring banks to give loans to people who couldn't afford to buy houses. Thanks for leading us to this nightmare that we're in. The forethought of this New York Times writer in a 1999 article is quite telling. And Mr. President, while the media won't talk TODAY about how you caused this mess, I will.
